Need a website?
Do you need a website, but have no idea where to start or worried it's going to cost you a small fortune? Fear not this article is for you, either find yourself a company to do everything for you, which can be very expensive depending on your needs. Or give it a go yourself, you do not need any technical skills, all you need is an idea and the right tools.
OK you have decided to create your own website, so what do you need to do and if you later decide you do need a web-designer you won't have to start all over again, they can continue where you leave off, so you have nothing to lose!
You need the following and to be aware of ongoing costs;
- A web-hosting plan, which is typically charged yearly.
- A domain name, which is either renewed yearly (unless you have a 2, 5 or other yearly plan), or no fee if it is part of your web-hosting plan.
- An idea of the content you wish to show.
Probably the most important thing to decide on is the domain name, this is the name of your website. Ideally this should be your company name if it's available, if you are a new start up then please read this article on Starting a New Business.
If your company name is not available then try and find something that fits, as this domain name will be used for you website name and email address. The other thing to remember is the top level domain you want to choose, for example; .com, .co.uk, .net, .org etc.
If your company is not available then try using a hyphen, or adding a location or service. For example if "xyzplumbing" has been taken, then try "xyz-plumbing" or "xyzplumbingandheating". Also if you are UK company and "xyzplumbing.co.uk" is taken, then maybe see if "xyzplumbing.com" or "xyzplumbing.net" is available.
